The Discovery, launching from Cape Canaveral on Monday morning, 6:21 AM. Technically a night launch, so hard to get a good picture; it was basically like a sun igniting 10 miles away, and then lifting into the sky with great force. It was truly awesome when the sound hit us nearly a full minute later. The air actually shook back and forth, and a car alarm went off on the street behind us.
A childhood dream; I've wanted to see a shuttle launch for nearly 30 years.

like shooting the moon or any other concentrated light source you DON'T use a long exposure even though it's night.
Yes, the solid rocket boosters put out too many lumens.
Take the moon.
Proper exposure of the moon at 200 iso is:
1/250 at f11 give or take 1 stop depending on how clear the sky is your shooting through aka: Atmosphere.
yes, it's too far away but shoot with much shorter time frames and you will get more definition and not a white blob of light.

This is a "snapshot" thread, my friend. I was having to watch over 4 kids that attended this event with me; no time or attention available to worry about exposure times or other photographic nittygritty. Point and shoot.![]()

pardon me for trying to help out.
This IS a photography forum and I'm sure maybe others would like to hear some proper technique.
So, Snapshot means an image with no merit and crappy technique ? Good to know.

Ouch. I hope you don't critique everyone on every facet of their life like this.
Ray, I was going to say great shot - I'd love to go to a launch some day. Personally, I like that your picture left some of the experience to the imagination. I imagine the rumble you hear/feel is like those little gold fireworks that you can feel in every inch of your body.

I used to live in Palm Bay, about 40 min south of there.. seen a few shuttle launches. Every time is like the first time. Truly is an awesome sight to see and feel.

SUCH IS MANGO!
I wasn't critiquing anyone at all.
Nor was I critiquing his image or experience.
I have seen the shuttle a few times, its a great thing to see.
I was just posting some proper technique for any future launch photographers that might not realize how to do it.
He's the one that retorted back "hey buddy, this is just a Snapshot thread" implying that my proper technique help was NOT needed nor warranted.
So, if that's what it is..... so be it.

Crappy technique and no merit...wow. I was merely trying to share a fun event with friends through the medium of a quick snapshot taken at the time. My apologies.
This was, just for the record, exactly what the launch looked like from 10+ miles away. There was no definition to be had.
No retort intended. You read a lot more into my response than I said. He's the one that retorted back "hey buddy, this is just a Snapshot thread" implying that my proper technique help was NOT needed nor warranted.
Have a good evening.

Not to get too OT, but did you like it down there (in comparison to VA)? I'm most likely attending a PA school in Miami for 2 years and could see myself trying to migrate North, but remain within Florida. I've been chasing warm weather over the last 5 years or so, but Virginia just isn't far enough south.

my apologies for looking too much into your reaction to my advice.
-- as I said I was not critiquing your image or experience in my initial post.
cheers
