    well that job I did hourly since I knew that cook top thing was going to be a PITA. It actually took about the same time to do the cook top as it did the fireplace what with working around the cabinets and all the corners. The fireplace itself came out around $1500 in labor for just laying the rock(doesn't include any lathe\mortar\stone\labor for prep work) but it's all cut dry stack which means almost every piece on that thing was cut and squared up so you don't need to grout it. It's also fairly high quality work so there aren't many chinches (fill in pieces) and there are very few gaps. You could get it done cheaper if you went with something grouted or could deal with a looser setup but most people requesting stone on the interior of their homes are pretty picky. There's a saying in construction, you can get it done better, faster, or cheaper; pick two.
