Yeah, I was at school prepping for a mycology lab I had to teach at 1PM.

That being said, don't be afraid of a little knowledge - I get paid quite well to be able to spew that off the top of my head.

Basically they will deliquesce into a pile of inky go of their own doing (not just rotting like they all will eventually). In fact they are also known as the inky caps and people have written some improtant documents historically using a quill and these mushrooms. It is an oxygen dependant reaction so you can keep them for some time in the fridge if you put them in a bucket of water. Basically, the deliquescence causes the margin to curl back just as the basidia are maturing so that the spores can be successfully launched into the air (yet the rest of the cap is still practically enclosed so that the developing fertile portions are protected).

They are fruiting from a mycelium that is decomposing the thatch in your yard and does not infect plants or people etc. The closely related C. atromentarius has anabuse compounds which, if consumed with alcohol, will give you an instant horrific three day hangover. They mess up your alcohol dehydrogenase system and cause acetaldehyde to accumulate.

Long story short, it is going to turn into a puddle of black icky goo very soon. Great halloween photo op coming your way there.
    cough cough....
    wtf just happened here?
Seriously, though, that's actually quite interesting not to mention, educational! And here, I just thought it'd make a neat photo

    Holy biology!!

That makes me think of my twice a week bio lectures...1st year science student. I prefer chemistry myself.

    Physics FTL.

Speaking of physics...midterm tomorrow. Gotta study.

    That was the popularized version.

At least I didn't start with "Given that the spores are thick walled with an apical pore and the cuticle is cellular (a polycystoderm) and the spore print is purple black the mushroom seems to be a typical representative of the Coprinaceae. In fact it is the type species of the type genus in the classic family designation. However, sequence data has confirmed that it is the only taxon in the genus that is unrelated to the other members of the family.... I applaud your knowledge, but I understood absolutely none of that. You better watch it though. If you're not careful, I'm going to start spouting off military acronyms and a lot of pilot speak. I don't want to, but I'll do it.
