HDR is High Dynamic Range. The idea is that your eye can take in much more range of light and color as it scans over something than your camera, so you try to fill in the extremes by combining shots.

There's a fellow over at Flickr who's a real expert with it. He recommended Photomatix as the tool for creating the HDR image and for manipulating it. I use that and PS.

Some people go nuts adding saturation, luminosity, and contrast, and the effect starts to look almost computer-generated. It looks cool with cars and stuff. I may try that out, eventually.

I'll never go back to film. Being able to take 100 shots in the hopes of finding 2-3 that I like for virtually no cost is extremely cool.

maybe you're just not that good.

there are aspects of film that you just can't replace. especially things like processing in developer @ the wrong temperature, playing with the time spent in chemicals...I guess I just like it wet and messy.

Thanks Ray, that is exactly the problem I'm having. This is a tough one to crack because I don't carry too much equipment around in the woods, and like to take the picture of the mushroom without moving it to more (or less) light. I take a bunch of exposures and always like one part in one picture and another elsewhere. I have a bunch I have bracketed with the E.V. knob so I'll see what I can brew up.

Again, cool shots and thanks for turning me on to this technique.

Yep, I played with CS2's function a bit.
I really like the tone mapping tools that Photomatix gives; they're tailored to manipulating an HDR.

The -2EV got the clouds, and the +2EV got the stonework nicely. F22 in aperture priority. Gives it kind of a "painted" quality.

    That is one stunning image.
