    The are from the actual Cape Hatteras Point...basically if you looked at a map, its the very tip of the Outerbanks. And off the coast, its whats called the Diamond Shoals. Basically about 50 miles out into the ocean in the OBX/Hatteras area, the ocean is only anywhere from 5-15 feet deep in almost all areas, so it creats a lot of turbulance and waves. It is also kinda like where two bodies of water coming to land meet. The Gulf Stream also cuts very close to the coastline of the US in this area as well, so its turbulent water to begin with...

    Its also the area with the most shipwrecks in the world due to the extreme shallow depths(more than Cape Horn of South America or the Bermuda Triangle...actually I think this part is considered part of the Bermuda Triangle). This is why you see so many lighthouses and light ships in the OBX area...

    I love it there...its my Utopia...

    Its a bit of a touristy area, but its not too bad. Not like the broke ass Jersey Shore (which I still love cause its close to home) where it gets so packed you can't even move...
