    hey this may sound dumb, i've done some night shots with the lights on the car.
    i was wondering how NOT to get the headlights to blow out like the two you showed in your "bad" shots? or is it impossible due to the long shutter and the massive amount of light that the headlights produce?

    There's a few tricks involved. Part of it has to do with your exposure time, but also your aperture and the angle you take the picture from. Also, the best method is to have someone hiding in your car and start your exposure, then have them turn on the lights and then end your exposure...that way you'll have a properly exposed car and headlight.
