I was actually just screwing around with locking one of the 9 focus boxes. It was intentional. And the phallic thing ... that's washington's monumental pen1s.

He was speaking more on a compositional aspect.

In your photograph, it's not clear what you want us to look at. You have the foreground of some cherry blossoms that are in focus. And you have the Washington Monument smack-dab in the middle of your background that's out of focus. It seems obvious that you want to draw attention to the monument so it doesn't make sense that it's OOF. And if you wanted your subject to be the cherry blossoms, it doesn't make sense that you would choose such a background that draws so much attention away from your subject.

If I think I get exactly what bokeh is - as in I know what it is but I'm not sure I know it when i see it - is it the first pic where it comes out really badly?

you think that lens is gonna be a paperweight? Or will this not be a problem with wide shots? (it really wasn't made for closeups, in its flimsy defense.)

...tough crowd. First day on the new camera, people!

...and I appreciate feedback, as I have spent about the last 6 years using a point n' shoot.

Sorry if I came across harshly...I wasn't trying to be overly critical. I guess I got a bit too wordy.

Oh I don't mind at all. I'm an editor by profession and all day long I have people hate me for criticizing their work. I dish it out, in other words, so I can take it. Or at least I should be able to.

More pics this weekend, I hope. The L lens shows up today, I think.

It won't be a problem with wide shots, so really no worries there. It's the first pic I've seen from that particular lens, but from my eyes it's definitely not spectacular.

no, but it was also under $150, so at least it wasn't an expensive mistake.
