    A Few Buttpacking Pics...

A buddy and I did 37ish miles of Appalachian Trail from the Winchester area to US40 in Maryland over the weekend, and I grabbed a few pics. Wish I was still out there!

I live right near Harper's Ferry. If you haven't done it yet, go tubing down the river in the summer. It's a great time- a bunch of friends, a cooler of beer and beautiful scenery. How is the hiking around there?

    Great pics Ray!!

We stayed at an AT shelter last year on an overnight and it got fairly overrun with through hikers. We were really generous with all our goodies since we were well laden with fresh beers & food etc. and everyone in our group felt their ungrateful "entitled" attitude was unsavory. Probably just a bad sample but I would not choose to stay there again....

Through-hiker experiences vary, but I know what you're talking about. Viewing it from their perspective, they've been semi-continuously on the trail for months, and have seen literally a thousand weekend warriors come and go.

"Distance traveled" seems to be the catalyst with this kind of stuff. When my buddy and I have had an 18-mile day, and are ready to keel over and die, we have to combat a certain feeling of entitlement over the locals that parked 1-1/2 miles away and dragged a cooler up to the trail shelter. Through-hikers have been at it for hundreds if not over a thousand miles, and I can see where they'd start to feel a bit elitist. The guy that was with us at the shelter Sunday night (trail name was "Lucky") was actually a really cool guy.

edit: I'm not thinking of you with my reference to "locals coming from a mile away", btw..

Oh, that's quite alright. We were the locals and we pretty much brought the kitchen sink and I know you know I've done long trips. On that token though we definately weren't playing the "this is our backyard" card. These guys were basically trail mad IMO. Some openly admitted hating the long term experience but were unwilling to compromise their goal. Others were just putting foot after foot to make their miles, and I don't think they ever looked up off the trail anymore.
