That really sucks for the people living in the area. Anyone know how this one started?

The people who lose their houses are the ones who don't follow sound fire prevention practices no matter how close the fire is to their house. What drives my father and fellow Cal Fire employees nuts when fighting these so cal/malibu fires, is when the landscape is over grown, dry and unkempt all the way up to the house. At this point the home owner is just asking for it, and there is little anyone can do to save the structure in a fast moving fire. Reference Oakland hills fires in late 80's.

Remember keep a minimum of a 6 foot cleared fire break all the way around your home. Keep tree branches and other foliage trimmed back and away from your house and you'll be safe. Oh and bark of any kind in your landscaping is a firemans nightmare, and will have to be completely removed in the instance of a fire.
