    Pentax *ist Dl

I love taking pictures and i'm looking into buying a more serious camera. I've been using 4.0mp kodak digital camera where you can't change a damned thing. Has anybody had any experience with pentax? Remember this is for a beginner but i want to be able to take some good rolling shots, and night shots. I've read all the specs on this camera and know that i can change the settings that i would need for that. Is this a good choice for a beginner?

I've heard decent things about the Pentax, but I think where it really comes in lacking is the amount of lens support for it. Since they use their own mount (unlike Fuji cameras, that use a Nikon mount), the selection of lenses is rather limited. Have you checked out the review of it on dpreview.com yet?

A used Nikon D70 or Canon 300D will easily fall into that price range.

The range of lenses may be fine for a beginner, but when comparing the features and lenses available for the D70 or 300D, there's no question that you'd be better off with a different camera.

Yeah, what Armin said. Also, you're going to be changing the body and keeping the lenses. If you decide to get more serious with it you're going to want something that has a wide range of lenses to choose from. It's gonna be a pain to sell it all and start over. You can't go wrong w/ Nikon or Canon.

I've been using Pentax film cameras for about 30 years with no problems. Isn't the *ist supposed to fit the old lenses? There are plenty of great lenses out there if that's the case. I was thinking about getting one, but if the old lenses don't fit, I'm going to switch to Canon when I go digital.

That, I really don't know about. I'm sure that's something that's mentioned on DP Review.
