The disciplined response of a martial arts practitioner and 40 ain't as bad as people make it out to be

Numbers are boring. I'm increasingly seeing it as a waste of my time to sit around dwelling on the number of years between today and when my chain-smoking mother spewed me forth into the world.
If I make it to 100, I'll invite you all to a party at my flat on the Martian colony.

Tae Kwon Do was really good to me in college. Yeah, there are a lot of impractical but beautiful kicks taught, but if you have a decent instructor, he'll take the time to show you the things that are more useful on the street. Skill levels really varied...I knew guys with low-level belt rankings that worked out and sparred a lot, that could beat the snot out of the "I showed up for 2 years at a center in my home town, so here's my black belt" guys that showed up.

Sparring was a regular occurrence (usually two or three out of the four days per week I'd go), and a few of us would be a bit more rogue in our styles. My issue with TKD stems from the fact that TKD relies so heavily on kicks, that once someone gets inside and out of the typical strike zone, many people with a TKD background will freeze up.

I am a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu. I run a school in the Farmington Maine area if anyone is interested. Training is good for the soul.
