Pitch black photos of my college at night came out like this

I have no idea how this happened, but I took these in the pitch black without the flash on my camera, and it took a really long time to take the pic, and then when I looked at them, they came out like this.

Well, I know that the shutter was open and yadda yadda so thats why they came out like this, but I didnt change any settings on the camera itself.

The camera was resting on a railing.

i really like the middle picture - how the colors are divided. blue on top, green at the bottom, lights are the division... very cool.

Wow, nice colors. With the shutter speed on your camera open for a long time, that's the results you can get.

Very nice, intentional or no. One of the limitations of my little digital camera is that it won't do a bulb exposure.

those are pretty badass. i've never been able to do that with my current digicam... it's too slow at taking pics (even at normal speed) and they come out all blurry and lame.

Well, I set the camera down on a flat railing, and pushed the button and let go, and it took about 20 seconds to take the picture. If I was holding it still, forget it

I think those pics turned out well. I wish I could take pics. I just point and shot and hope it turns out. Nice thing about digicam is that if I dont like the pic I can delete them.

When I had time to dabble in photography (we're talking pre-digital age here, folks), I'd take LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of frames of my intended subjects, with as many different variations of shutter speeds, apertures, filters, etc. as I could think of. Most of the time it was 97% crap, 2% decent, and 1% "Hey WOW! Look at that!". There may be people out there that can grab the perfect picture with a couple of tries, but I was never one of them.
