I just ask the question because another user had stated that they break apart in the combustion chamber which seemed highly unlikely to me. It is not that hard to gap iridium plugs just takes a little more time

I had heard rumours of this too, now that you mention it. But I wasn't able to ever verify the truth of the matter. After all...what is going to break in the combustion chamber? The lip? The 'trode? Seems unlikely to me. Maybe it occurs under extreme build conditions? I don't know. It just seems unlikely to me. I've cracked a few plugs before, and you know it when it happens. My bet is the breaking occured due to inproper cams/valve clearance...and this is not all that uncommon.

True i have also heard of improper clearance issues. But on a stock motor like 2/3 of the subys are and for that matter the rest of the other makes and models. Engines that have never been torn apart and or the head removed. It just didnt add up to me. The only thing i could think off was cracking the plug before installing it, either the electrode or the porcelin, and not being competent enough to realize it before hand.

Check your spark plugs for unusual color- lot's of good sites explaining the different colors and conditions.

You have effectively reset your ECU by disconnecting your battery, which means the Advanced Multiplier (AM) is set back to 8, you want it to get to 16. You can do this quicly by gently driving (no boost) until you have a place you can get into 3rd gear- accelaerate slowly, left foot braking (puts load on) keep boost at ~ 2-3 psi for ~ 20-30 secs and it should be there. Ofcourse if you have a Delta Dash, you can tell for sure.

    Happy driving.

yes- disconnecting the battery will reset your computer to a Advanced Multiplier of 8- this is right in the middle of the AM range- 1 being "unhappy", 16 being very "happy" (thus more timing and performance).

A little "trick" to get the AM up to 16 quickly is doing as described- if you skip this "trick" no biggie- as the computer learns (and is "happy") it will move the AM towards 16

    very helpful thread

I just finished pulling stock plugs (65k) for the iridium one step colder (tbe & cobb stage 2). The "game" is figuring out which extensions and swiveling pieces will get the job done. I got the laptop in the garage with the wireless and just kept scrolling thru the tutorial until job done. The iridiums came gapped just under 030, so I left him. I havent test driven yet, but it did start up fine and idle smoothly for several minutes before I shut it down. Thanks for the tutorial Big Sky!

    re: the swivels

for anyone having difficulty with the swivel extensions here's a nice little trick i picked up. wrap the part that actually swivels in a wee bit of electrical tape to provide some resistance to the flip floppity nature of the little imps. i always use 3m super 33 because it doesn't leave a residue and because its made out of angels.

hope that helps a wee scosche
