Our cars don't have speedometer cables.

Do you have a check engine light?

Fair enough. However, the point remains. If the device sending the signal, whether mechanical or digital, is no longer sending (or the receiver no longer receiving) then it would explain why only the speed/mileage is not changing.

Bingo. That's why I asked if he has a check engine light. If the speed sensor is malfunctioning, it will trip a code. If the cluster is malfunctioning, it won't.

ehh it could go either way.

I had the same problem, and the code would come on like once every 6 months.

Sometimes the speedo would go crazy, while other times it wouldnt.

My miles were also being clocked wrong.

BTW, it was the speed sensor.

Odds are you had a pending code the whole time.
