iPod integration with WRX stock radio/cd player

    Hi all,

Just got an iPod, was wondering if anyone has sucessfully connected their iPod via line-in or something similar to their WRX stock radio. My friend did it with his VW but i wanted to know if any WRX owners have figured it out yet.

    thanks

you can do it..there is an adapter that you plug into the cig lighter and the ipod ..it transmits on a station that you dont use on your radio..then you just tune in your radio to that station to listen to whats on your ipod

I think I read once about this guy that attemped doing the in-line mod and ended up screwing his stock radio up big time.

    The FM transmittors work, sometimes.

The problem with the transmittors is that they piggyback onto a radio signal, they don't actually create it. The optimal channel to find is one with a strong signal and nothing but white noise coming through. (which is basically impossible to find due to FM "splashback") For example, if you're cruzing on the freeway in a metropolitan area, you might get decent reception and therefore a good transmission. But if you're cruizing in the mountains, good luck getting it to work consistently if at all. Also, not all transmittors were created equal; the iTrip and the Transpod FM Transmittor are two of the better one's. Plus the sound quality with the transmittors is pretty poor.

I personally am using a cassette tape adapter until I buy an aftermarket head unit with an extra auxillary input to do a direct connect to my iPod. Cassette adapters are cheaper, more consistent, and sound better than FM transmittors any day of the week. Hope this helps a bit.

yeah thanks for the advice guys...

I was really trying to avoid the FM transmitters b/c they are so inconsitent and low-quality . I bought one of those for $70 at the apple store and it didn't even work! The casette ones ARE alot better but I was looking for the line-in or aux mod using the stock radio.

    thanks guys,

I've actually seen some adapters that you can plug your Ipod into the external CD pack changer jack on a stock stereo... that way you can use your IPOD just like it was a 12 pack CD changer in your trunk..

Not sure if the stock WRX stereo has the right jack though??

I am connecting my iPod to the stock stereo using the tape deck adapter. It sounds ok for now. I would like to install an aftermarket stereo and wire the iPod via aux input. Can't resist spending the money on engine mods so far.

I have the TransPod FM radio transmitter and it worked great in the Jeep Wrangler I was driving for a while- took it on a trip to San Jose, CA and back and I had no problems with sound quality or anything.

Then I got my WRX and the lighter plug doesn't fit snugly enough into the cars lighter socket so I can't use it. The unit spins fairly freely and it pops out a little so I loose power...

Someone installed an ipod dock into the crappy cup holder on the dash- they were still working on how to get a clean wire routing tho. Not sure where I saw it tho... Keep us fellow iPod owners out here of what you find

You can get a little collar that goes around the car power adapter to make it fit more snuggly. You could probably get one at radio shack or some car audio store. I got mine with my Escort 8500 x50.

i'm still working on this, and have been searching all over for info.

best I can tell, the stock radio/changer has no input for an additional changer, so using one of those fake changer cables with an aux-in is more or less out of the question.

The only glimpse of hope I found was that the Analog to Digital Converter used inside the deck (I think it's a TI part, I found a thread about it a few days ago) has an option for an input. I doubt this pin of the chip was ever connected when it was used in the stereo - so that MAY be an option. however, I have a feeling that it is just a single pin, so it would only give you mono sound - which sucks. I'm gonna dig around for the thread again (can't remember what forum it's on) and keep you guys posted.

I am also seeking for a method to do this. I'm sick of using CDs, and I recently started downloading music from iTunes, so i dont even have new cds anymore.

I have wanted to try the FM trans, but have heard bad things about them. I would love to find a way to hard wire the ipod without having to buy a new head unit.

If anyone has any other info on this, let us know!

The Ice port thing listed above looks nice, but is on a horrible site that doesn't show how it works or how its connected. And merely says it works with Subarus in general, not which model....so who knows. Does anyone have any info on the ICE>link product?
