    Question Radar detectors

Anybody have any good info about detectors? I'm not really interested in the top of the line ones since I owe my parents 6 thousand dollars or something...But what are the best ones that you can get for fairly cheap? I keep checking ebay, yes ebay, and I'm seeing ones for like 7 bucks that seem to have quite a few options, but what exactly is the huge difference in these and the 100+ dollar ones?

    Thanks

The cheap-o's have no detection range and love to give you false positives and let you know when you're passing grocery stores.

Check out RadarTest.com for the lowdown on detectors. For me, it's the V1/Escort 8500 x50 or nothing. All other detectors are junk IMHO

I have tried many detectors over the years. And also spent much time researching them.

In my opinion if you are not prepared to spend the money for one of the top ones you are wasting your time. In the olden days (80's) police would just drive around with their x-band radar on all the time and fairly inexpensive radar detectors would do a fine job of alerting you, however, as radar has has become more varied and instant-on radar has become the norm, and many many places use motion detector door opener, detectors have had to become more sophisticated.

This has led to 2 thing: 1-more expense and 2-less effectiveness. The technology used to try and block out false positives has made most detectors less effective. And the ones with good enough designs and components to actually eliminate the false positives while still maintaining decent range are somewhat expensive.

I have had an Escort 8500 for a couple of years now and am very pleased with it. My advice on a tight budget would be to keep an eye on ebay and try to get a deal on one of the top 3:

    Escort 8500
    Valentine One
    Bel whatever-their-latest-top-model-is

Based on research I did the summer before last, I would not get a cobra detector. That being said, they may have come out with a new model that is comparable to the big boys...but I doubt it.

As I said, I would stick to the top models, Valentine One, Escort 8500, or Bel 9xx.

But you could do some research and maybe find another new model someone has come out with that is well rated. I found that Car and Driver has radar detector tests fairly regularly...otherwise search the web and I bet you will find some comparison sites.

    good luck!

I wouldn't go with Cobra detectors either

    Click Me

This is there newer model, and it really isn't all that. The 6200 is an older model anyway, which I would definately stay away from.

    V1, Escort 8500, or nothing.

I have a V1 hardwired into my WRX, and I will absolutely not drive with anything else. I usually leave it on logic mode, so it still picks up some of the automatic doors, but it doesnt make a sound. Its pretty easy to figure out which is a threat and which is a false positive when you have the arrows to help you out

Any tips on doing the hardwire? Just got an X50 and can't stand the included cord. How involved is it?

you guys are missing the point, he said CHEAP.
i'm using a Passport 4500 that i got from my father in-law. i have it hard wired and find it very effective and don't seem to get many false alarms (except for motion sensor doors).
you can find them on ebay for $25-$50.

i'm probably going to get a 8500 but not in a rush.
