Do-it-yourself Head Unit and Speaker replacement

Alright folks, I've searched this forum a couple of times now using a couple of different methods. I can't find definitive answers on DIY replacement of the head unit and speakers.

Are there any links or anything out there that tells about ACTUAL replacements? I did find one at http://users.sisna.com/ignatius/subaru/mods/index.html for speakers, but more would be helpful.

    1. How to replace the HU (6-cd changer) with a Pioneer MP3 unit?
    a. Is there such a thing as a Subaru to "Standard" harness?
    b. What will I find when I remove the stock HU, is there a Subaru connector that will disconnect from the HU, OR am I splicing wires?

    2. What size speakers really fit in the WRX '03 Sedan? Please don't just throw out brand suggestions. I'd like to know actual model numbers of actual speakers that actually fit (with spacer size if needed.), preferable from folks who actual have said speaker in a car.

    Thanks,

    RayK

P.S. I hate to sound anal in this post, but I found MANY threads with helpful suggestions and "maybe's" and "possibly's". I found very few DEFINITE answers. I did find some fairly complex installation procedures, including trimming down parts to make the window work. Hopefully, that is not the ONLY way to accomplish this task.

has fitment info for many popular models of speakers. They have spacers for sale as well.

I think ScoobyMods had info for replacing the head unit, but I have not really looked into that (probably should since I already have a system waiting to be put in from my previous car). Hope this helps you.
