This is a discussion on Hope To Never Use within the Interior Mods forums, part of the Tech & Modifying & General Repairs category; I would personally put it under the seat. Although it would probably get thrown in the trunk. Nice... I guess?...

I think that's the first mod that every WRX owner should start with, but don't you think the added weight my be a bit too much?

How many car fires? Few. There are still reasons to carry an extinguisher though.

In other countries it is *mandatory* and checked like all other safety equipment.

My reasoning for carrying one isn't only for my sake; I've driven by far more car fires than I've actually had in my own cars over the years. I've never had to use my own extinguisher in my own car, though I've come close, but I have had to use my extinguisher on someone else's car -- and have stopped complete strangers who did the same when mine and his and the neighbours weren't enough...

If *everyone* carried one, we'd all benefit.

The mounting location is just not a good idea though. If you can, mount it in the passenger footwell or if worse comes to worse carry it in the trunk. If you are interested in showing off your extinguisher, just get a sticker "Fire Extinguisher Inside" like many service vehicles have -- in an emergency someone will know to break your windows and get the extinguisher.

I would say under the front of the passenger seat would be best, that way it doesn't take up leg room and its quick and easy access for you or a passenger. But way up there in the back is kinda pointless and dangerous.

wouldn't that pretty much prevent any adjustment of the front seat [i.e. back and forth]?

i still think that mounting it behind the driver's seat would work especially because i am tall and no one really sits behind me anyways.

Merc, before buying the Yanktanks and getting into Chrysler Neon production, was known for quality, performance, and safety above all else. To a large extent Merc still is (though the MLs are a bit of a fiasco and they're selling G-series at 4 times the price they ought to IMO, but that's another story...).

Anyway, the only extinguisher I've seen installed at the works was in a Merc 190e 2.5-16 Evolution II, the one with the huge square wing (predating the Sti's or Lancer's) and the larger 4 cyl with the Cossie heads (I think, been a while).

The Germans mounted the extinguisher in the passenger front footwell. It's a larger footwell than the rear passenger footwells, the seat can still travel, and the driver can reach it.

I know a couple of guys (rescue / fire guys) who always have an extinguisher in their vehicles.

They're required on boats. Got one right under the helm on ours.

I was thinking, in a WRX, maybe it would be better mounted right behind the center console. Just an idea. Over the window like that looks a little dangerous.

Good call on this... just make sure it is mounted so that it doens't fly out your front windshield if you do get into an accident. I think SD-GR has a good point with the front passenger footwell b/c of the accessibility. ALL better then mounting it near someone's head.

Are there any legal ramifications if a passenger did get hurt or killed in an accident by the owner-mounted fire extinguisher??

In a country that has to pass laws specifically intended to prevent overweight people from taking restaurants to court, who knows...
