I used to have the escort 8500. Best money I ever spent on a RD. Unfortunately, it got confiscated by the popo last year... being that they are illegal in Ontario..

It was at that time that I found that the cops around here in Ontario were using a NEW kind of radar detector detector, known as Spectre... It picked off my 8500 like a fly. I had since done more research on this "Spectre" RDD, and found that even the V1 is NOT immune to it. If your local law enforcement uses it, it's only a matter of time before you get busted.. (if they are illegal in your province/state). I will be waiting for the annual RD test to see which RD's are in fact immune to Spectre before I pick up another detector, if at all...

Hi guys, i new here and well ive been readin a few of these things and i see alot of misinformation people here have about radar detectors

alright first thing i got to lay down..

    1) Passport radar detectors and Valentine Radar Detectors are the EXACT SAME detectors, their software and everything is all the same, and then the only difference between the 2 are that V1's have arrow's... and have a few lil cool parts for us Bimmer people :P IE: We get to use our onboard computers to show us the signal's and all so we can hide our v1's :P

    2) This horse**** of Radar Detector Detectors are horse****. The "Spectre" is a RADAR GUN (Im a traffic cop heh i know what im talkin about)

    3) Understand how a radar detector works... ie: heres the lamen terms.

Using the V1 as an example..

V1 is on and it has 2 sensors built in it, which look for a radar gun that shoots out the radar band range's. and it see's these wave's being sent out from the gun... and it says HEY DRIVER POPO ahead... but does not send out any actual signals (hence why the "Radar Detector Detector" is horse ****)

Now dont get me wrong us cops know a few things to know if the driver has a R'D

here is a few key things we look for

Lets say a White STI is flying down highway I-95 at about 85 in a 65 speed zone

Well here i am in a A.V.E (Authorized Vehicle Entry only) and i have my gun pointed out towards oncoming traffic and i see good ol STI flying down towards me i pull the trigger and hold for 30 secs (minimum) and he has a V1 and all of sudden i see the STI drop from 85 - 60ish, that tells me has one and its a dead give away that he was doin something he shouldnt... so i can give him a ticket for a RD or what ever else he was doin.

I speed like crazy in the interestate and my $90 Cobra that I've had for 2 years has yet to fail me, as I've never had a speeding ticket *knock on wood*. Although, I would like to get a V1 or Passport 8500 as extra insurance, because I've had alot of close calls.

I'm really sorry, but your research is extrememly flawed....Either that, or you aren't truely a traffic cop... If you are a traffic cop, you need to do some homework......

1)The V1 and the 8500 don't share anything more than their purpose in life. The Escort shares technology with Bel RD's since Escort and Bel merged a few years back. RD's use basically the same TYPE of components, but they aren't the same at all. The V1 is made by Valentine Research, while the 8500 is made by Cinncinatti Microwave. Mike valentine helped to start Cincinnatti, but later left to start Valentine Research. Saying that the V1 and 8500 have the same guts is like saying that the Lancer Evo and the WRX Sti are the same under the skin...

    2) The "horse ****" that the Spectre is a radar gun is just that.....horse ****.
This is a link to the Spectre RDD:http://www.spectre-rdd.com/spectre.html
Does that look like a radar gun to you???
When my detector was taken, that was what was hangin on his windshield, and explained why he got me, despite him not scanning for radar at the time.

    3) Your misninformation that radar detectors do not send out a signal is just that again... misinformation... ALL radar detectors leak a signal at a certain frequency... The Lo Frequency (local oscillator). It is this signal that the RDD's look for, since all radar detectors need a local oscillator to pick up radar. Back when VG2 came out, the detector manufacturers were able to alter the frequency at which this leakage could be detected by VG2. Now that Spectre is here, it is much more difficult, since it listens for a WIDE range of frequencies for leakage. This is how it is able to detect everything out there.

Even VG2 let off some leakage as well, this is how some Rd's such as some Cobra models were able to warn the user of VG2 use in the vicinity.

    4) There are several ways to know if a driver has a RD. One way is to hit the car with INSTANT ON radar, and see what happens.. Usually, the driver is startled, and mashes the brakes..This can be seen as the front of the car dips as it approaches... How do I know this, I have had cops do this in my vicinity on the highway, no doubts trying to flush me out by looking for the tail lights to light up everytime they fire up the radar.

Another way is to travel at a distance behind the suspect, and turn on the radar, turn it off, and then turn it on again once every few seconds... The driver that has radar can usually be seen hitting his brakes (brake lights light up) every time the cop turns his radar on.

I suggest that you do a little more research into the workings of radar detectors, and radar detector detectors before you decree the info others give as horsecrap....

It's perfectly legal to jam (or diffuse) laser/lidar, as there is no governmental agency that currently regulates light transmission in that particular manner (edit, FDA according to above post). It MAY violate a local ordinance in terms of "interferring with a speed monitoring device", but that is unlikely at this point. So technically, you could probably hook up a Reagan era Star Wars Missile Defense System to the front of your car and not a damn thing anyone could do about it until you accidentally blow up the local Kwiki Mart.

With regard to laser, the less reflective surfaces on your car, the more stealth you will be. Big headlights, license plates, fog lights make excellent targets, along with white and light colored vehicles. A black C5 Corvette with no plate, for example, would not provide a strong reflection until it was very close to the laser source.

    Speed safely!
Laser is regulated by the FDA, NOT FCC and as such is not subject to the same regulations as radar jammers as you point out. In articles I have read laser "shifting" is perfectly legal in almost all states. I think there are just a few (just like there are with detector bands...va/dc but for some reason I think that the laser shifting is illegal in like Utah, cali and some other place). But be careful about what you "buy" as laser jammer/shifter, there is alot of crap out there. From what I have read from one of the car mag's recently the escort laser shifter was extremely effective in warning the driver of a laser alert and shifting the laser signal until the cars were able to slow down. It uses to sensors on the front and one in the rear to detect laser and can be linked up to the 8500. I just bought the new 8500 X50 (I had a regular 8500 that saved my ass countless times in the past 2yrs but got the new one because they said a 50% increase in effectiveness with some bands). I've just had it a week and am currently on a road trip so I'll let you know my impressions.
Bottom line is that unless you have a shifter, I don't care if you have V1, Bel, or escort if they are using laser on your car you WILL get tagged. Those guns measure your speed at the speed of light and no matter how fast you think your foot is at slowing down the gun is faster. Also, alot of times they will target your license plate and since the beam is so narrow it will not even set the detector off at all. You'll drive by and not even know you are getting pulled unless the beam is projected upwards towards the windshield into the view of the detector.
    Drive safe :-)

Man, I love discussion on radar. And on the weekends my friend and I will always run my Bel 985 along side his Passport 8500. People will give you some weird looks at red lights when they see two gawdy looking rd on one windshield.

From what we can tell these are almost identical, the Bel works a little better in a mountainish / hill enviroment. Where the passport will usually work a little better on really long straight driving *aka* Oklahoma.

However for anyone looking to purchase both of these come highly recommened. I would personally recommend the BEL 985 because its smaller, and its alot louder than the Passport. I like to drive with the windows down with the music up and the Bel can be set to where it will scare the crap out of you Where as the Passport is kind quiet and it clicks at you. It will pick up Ka and start this odd clicking sound.

And the display on the Bel is a little bigger and in the end I found it easier to understand and it was ALOT better at eliminating false alarms. But please understand when it comes to performance they both rock and will save your butt if you stay alert, and always watch your surroundings.

Next I would just like to add that both of the BEL and 8500 do a great job dealing with Ka (pop / instant on). But you have to be smart, dont haul a$$ on a road by yourself however if there is moderate traffic its a really safe bet he will scan someone before you get there. And if he does trust me these rd will pick it up, and you can give the cop a big ole Buddy Jesus thumbs up as you drive by

On the discussion of laser, again with moderate traffic these will pick it up but instead of the huge 1 to 2 minute gap you have with Ka you will have about 5-7 seconds to drop your speed. And that is only if he is actively scanning other cars.

And if you buy either of these use EBAY they both go for about $225 - $250.

    Just my two cents
    Thanks for reading.

V1 is the best hands down

It looks like this thread is dead anyway, but whatever...

I have a V1 and so does my dad, my friend's dad, and (thanks to me and my other friends) so does my best friend. There are always times where no matter what kind of radar detector you have you are gonna get toasted but that's life, you take that risk if you are gonna be haulin ass where you shouldn't be.

Where I live in CA the cops don't even know what Laser is yet, all of them use Ka band and because of this, the V1 has saved all of our asses mentioned earlier. I've tried the Passports and other detectors, but nothing compares to the V1. In other states and maybe even parts of CA, the cops might be more sneaky or use Laser but for where I live, the V1 is awesome and I fully recommend it. It might cost $400 but its gonna save you numerous tickets and the following insurance hikes from them.
    Damn I love these things!

I notice you are in Cinnci. I've ran into Ka, and Laser so far around that area. In KY its mainly K from the locals. Ka for the state boys, and around the Louisville or Lexington area you might catch some laser.

Now that I'm here in DE, its still mainly Ka, and every now and then I'll get some laser hits.

Now for a quick plug the Bel 985 owns me

I wanted to get the Valentine 1, but I couldn't justify the price (Best Buy discount on the 8500). So I got the 8500 x50 and will soon be integrating the ZR3 laser shifter. Should be some good protection from the smokey's.

Note: I've seen a few cop's still using X band here in Colorado. Silly cops
