Pic of your radar detector mounting spot...

I just got a bel vector 985, and im wonderin wheres best to mount it for sensativity, visability and what not. (I do plan on hardwireing eventually) I'm sure someone here has a good idea for a spot to mount it between now and then .

I've got a Bel 985 and I have it mounted on the windshield and powered through the cigarette lighter. From my experience, the best way to set up a radar detector for mazimum effectiveness is to have it so the the radar/laser sensor is in full view of the rear windshield. If you put it too low on the windshield it can cut the effectiveness of the rear dectection especially.

If you plan on hardwiring it, I guess you'd want to be mounting it up high. From what I hear that works good too, as long as it still has view through the windows.

Anyone know what detector(s) allow you to have remote sensors that you can position in the front grill, closer to the front license plate? I thought I saw a post awhile ago of a WRX that had a setup like that. That would be ideal for detection since they usually aim for the front license plate area, especially with laser.

i have an 8500, no pic, but its mounted just below the middle of the windshield plugged into the cig lighter
detects the po po just fine

I have the Bel 985 mounted on the stupid middle sun visor thingy with double sided tape. It works fine there and I have the wire run along the top of the windshield, down the A-pillar and into a cigarette lighter extension (from Radioshack). This is then wired into an acc wire and a ground. Works great - detector comes on when I start the car and no visable wires. You can also wire it into the dome light I believe.

Has anybody noticed a vast number of false laser detections from their radar/laser detector? I repositioned it up a little higher on the windshield and that seems to have helped a lot. It happens mostly in bright sunlight and bright streetlights- my best guess is that the light is bouncing off the hoodscoop and hitting the radar detector. When the scoop is dirty- no extraneous laser readings.

Any thoughts?

Here's a pic of my Escort SR1 HU. The front remote is mounted below the bumper, next to the license plate. The rear sensor mounts on the rear plate, and just senses laser.

Autoscan does a pretty good job finding out whats real and whats not. I've learned to for the most part just press mute real quick if its anything but KA. Also because I drive the same routes over and over I know where it routinely will pick up _band at _ level.

I have a passport 8500, and it's almost a perfect replacement for the mini sun visor. I did have to drill a hole in the mounting bracket that came with the 8500, but the visor bolt and hole location lined up perfectly. I also ran the SmartCord and put the mute button right next to the E-brake handle.

As a question:
i thought laser detectors had to be mounted as low on the windshild as possible, because cops aim the laser guns (which are much tighter beams ) at your front lisence plate?

I really don't think that is the case - the cops just aim at the car. Mine is mounted on the sun visor and certainly has had no probem picking up every time I have been laser gunned. I know this, because when you are laser gunned, it is usually accompanied by flashing lights!

thats pretty sweet. the idea of the mute by the ebrake is NICE!
