Reading some reviews at another site......I just want to clarify some things about radar detectors but im sure most of you know.

A radar detector is nothing but a mere warning or a heads up. Alot of people were giving the V1 a bad review cause 2 weeks after having it, one guy got hit with a laser and got a ticket. There is no radar detector out that will give you enough warning if the cops are using the laser. They do have laser kits out that are separate but they aren't all that great.

The hope you should have when depending on a radar detector is that the cops are doing a speed trap. Then it is 100% useful cause you can pick up signals from afar unless of course they are aiming for you. At night time i become more aware cause there is less vehicles on the road and it makes your chances of becoming the primary target go up.

Now these Passport 8500 and the V1 are good cause they can pick up radar from 2 miles away while the cheaper ones are much shorter. Basically what makes the V1 so useful is the distance in which it can start detecting and the arrows.

So to sum it all up, radar dector is only good if they are up the road a bit hitting other cars. If you are the target it wont do you any good.

Ok, the whole radar detector debate has been beaten to death. Out of the many, many reviews I have read, both professional and amatuer, the Valentine 1 comes out on top. It is always followed closely by the Passport 8500 and the Bel 985. The difference between the three is probably undetectable by any of us.

The V1 gives you the direction arrows, that is the biggest difference. The Passport and the Bel are near identical. When they test these things they are using all sorts of conditions and circumstances and then calculating results. The bottom line is that if you want the top, you go with the V1, but it will cost you $100 more. If you want the next one down, go with either the Passport or the Bel.

There is no way in hell that anyone can say "oh, the Passport is so much better than the Bel," or vice versa. Any of the three mentioned will give you an edge, but they are in no way foolproof. I have checked every web site I can find on this subject before I made my choice, and they all pretty much said the same exact thing. So there you go, now we should be able to give the radar detector debate a rest.

If you read any tests the top three as has been stated is always the V1, the Passport 8500 and the Bel Vector 985.

I have the Bel 985 and absolutely love it. It scores right up there with both the V1 and Escort only off by a few hairs if that.

Escort and Bel have the same parent company now so the technology is VERY comparable.

The V1's main advantage is the directional arrows and bogey counter, but I don't know about you but no matter where the signal is coming from, I'm slowing down.

The price and the almost identical detection rates of the Bel is what sold me. The firmware is also upgradeable so if technologies change, the Bel can change with them.

I got a very lightly used on for just about $150 on ebay and it was a great investment. I highly recommend it.

Hey i have the passport 8500 and the Valentine 1.
I keep the V1 in my 2002 M3 and the 8500 in the wrx.
The V1 is a better piece of hardware, but there is nothing wrong at all with the passport. Pick one, and dont leave home without it.
All show and no go . . .
Your car looks fast, but why's it so slo.

V1 all the way, baby! I have owned various and sundry detectors since the first Fuzzbuster came out in the 1970's. The V1 is, far and away the best. The Passport 8500 is also good, but IMHO is not at all in the same class as the V1 in terms of build quality, understated elegance, and useful features. The Bel, I did not like at all, but that may just be personal preference.

I was on a road trip last weekend, and the roads were pretty bad, with packed snow and ice, so I was driving sensibly at the speed limit, 70mph. As always, I had my V1 set on advanced logic (tall L) setting. I picked up 2 troopers running radar, one oncoming, at about 2 miles in rolling hills. The second was going the same direction as I was, traveling about 55mph, and I picked him up about a half mile ahead of me, evidently running radar only out his front. I also was painted with laser by a stationary, roadside trooper, who had backed onto an access road that was drifted so that only the top half of his car was above the snow drift. I caught a very brief register about 30 seconds before he painted me. It was just a fraction of a second bleep, but probably would have not given me a heads up normally. When he painted me, the V1 was maxed out and playing that cool laser tune. FWIW, no detector will give you good security against the instant on technologies like IO radar and laser. Your only prayer is to pick up somebody ahead of you being painted.
