Garage door opener - power question

For those that installed a garage door opener hardwired into their car: most door openers use 9V DC. Did you guys just hook it up to 12VDC of your car? Is there some way to check whether or not the 3 extra volts will be OK or not?

Most openers I've found will take 9 to 12 volts, but I did find one that didn't like it so I just left a 9v battery connected in an easy to replace location.
