    Weird AC noise, normal?

Recently, I noticed a strange noise when the AC is on. As it goes through it's cycles, it'll make a soft "woowoowoo" noise for 2 seconds, stops, then does it again every 10 seconds, as a constant cycle. It sounds like maybe a belt, or the compressor making the noise. I don't know too much about how ACs work, so thanks for bearing with my terminology.

Ok, let me try it again to make it more clear. It goes something like wooolooolooolooo wooolooolooolooo wooolooolooolooo. Just make an O with your mouth, and flap your toung around... Ok, never mind.

Mine does this too - it's the radiator fans turning on and off. The strange sound you describe is the fans being on.

I also noticed, however, that my A/C clutch kicks on and off every 15 seconds or so, even when I have the A/C on, and the car is idling in the driveway. Is that normal or do I need to have this checked out? Makes me wonder if that is why my A/C doesn't seem to be cold.

    Anyone?

Update: Took it to the dealer finally to ask about it. They say this is normal for the A/C to be kicking on and off at 10-15 second intervals. Something about the compressor not at a certain termperature yet. What kind of crappy design is that? This is sooo annoying.

Say it, Preacher-man!! This has been discussed at length by the 02 owner crowd; "Crappy Design" is the best that we could come up with. There was also some talk about relocating a temperature sensor within the condensor.... ???????? Our a/c just sucks. Period. Hey, the car does most everything else pretty well, right?!!!

Does this mean it was fixed in the 03's and 04's?

nope...like i posted above...our compressors has a frequent cycling. Take it into subaru and they will tighten a belt and that will reduce the noise a little but the compressor will still cycle. At least that is what they did for me.
