Aren't you supposed to check/replace the engine air filter at every other oil change or so? Or are you running an aftermarket engine air filter?

Ok, I put this in my car after I bought it, about a year and 2 months ago. I just replaced it with a new filter. I can't stress how much everyone who owns an impreza should spend 30 bucks and buy the filter for their car (www.subaruparts.com or your local dealer). I looked at my old one, it has so much crap in it, it was black in most parts. Stuff from hair, dust, pollen, little seeds even!! I can only imagine where all this stuff comes from and goes without this filter in place. It takes all of 20 min to install. I just want to say its well worth the time and money. Also if you are buying a new car, I think its like a 80 dollar option, save 50 bucks and do it yourself, good first modAlso changed my engine air filter too, that thing was pretty dirty as well even after just 15k miles, I think I may try a STI filter next

it goes right behind the glove box. Its like 7 screws and it installs above the blower motor. I just put one in myself. Ive also noticed at work from replacing alot of them, The cabin filters (Or HEPA Filter) get WAYYYYY dirtier then engine airfilters because the filbers are electrosaticly charged. IT filters in stuff that comes in through your cowl vent and helps keep your interior cleaner. Ill post pics tomorrow.

shoot , I'd hit it at current age, on roof of the car, with cousin driving , neighbor and town priest in the back seat, and that kid from "N.Korea" riding shotgun.
Thanks for posting the instrutctions mourning_air, basiclly you just take out the glove box and put the air filter in above the fan, really easy.
By the way, subaru says to change the Engine Air Filter at 30k miles.
The internal Air Filtration Filter should be changed once a year.
What about cars that don't already have the air filtration system? Will the filter just slide in there? Are any other parts needed?

Yep, just slides right in, just pop off the glove box, then the little white plate behind the glove box and slide it right in. The only part you need is the air filter itself. Only tool you need is a philips head screw driver. Very simple install, sorry I didn't take pics when doing it, but if you just open the glove box you can see the 5 screws, and if you look under it you see the other 2, and on the side is the plastic clip/screw that you have to pop out.Originally posted by hozed

Sweet, sounds easy I just ordered mine!
Don't be a sucker!
Don't buy Subaru's filter, go to Home Depot and get a good filter then cut it to size and stick it in there.
I did this it works great, I can tell because the car is less dusty.
For 10 bucks I have enough material to replace the filter 4 times!
What are the dimensions of the filter

I guess you could do that, but I think the subaru one is a little different then the air conditioning filters that you might find at home depot. I don't really mind spending 30 bucks a year on a filter I don't have to cut and I know works well to reduce dust and pollen.Originally posted by PKer
