I bought the knob and connector off a member of NASIOC. I'm not sure where to get the connector. I have heard of other members doing the same thing you have and it seems to work.

    Yes, quite ghetto.

FWIW I have a MOMO/Subaru OEM threaded knob...

I can get them for $85.00 plus shipping for anyone who wants one. Threads right on, and has a ring to hold the shift boot up. Also comes with a decal for the shift pattern.

Yeah I didn't like the one it came with since there wasn't any way to hook up the boot. I just laid against the bottom of the adapter. This one was only 25 dollars at sounddomain.com. alittle modification of course to get it to fit.

My half alluminum air leather is coming apart, the sticker has come off many times... i live in FL and i get burned by it badly, i leave my hat on the shift knob, because if i forget it makes shifting almost impossible... i say go all leather, i would if i did it again. BTW the sticker on top is annoying to get back on permanently, every couple of months mine seems to come off, especially if it's hot.... maybe the newer ones are attached better?

SPT - MOMO Race Air Leather Aluminum

Finally - Subaru SPT is offering the "subaru" version of the MOMO shift knob that matches the steering wheel. $84 - not bad for SOA.

I have something that pretty much looks like the momo air race leather (1/2 leather, 1/2 metal). Looks sweet. Put an "orphaned" sock on top of it to keep it cool when I park outside... strangely enough, though, a little bit of the sock sticks up above the knob so that it looks like the shifter is wearing a condom! Very strange site indeed... but it's not hot to the touch when I get back.
