This is a discussion on in-dash radar detector? within the Interior Mods forums, part of the Tech & Modifying & General Repairs category; Is there some law against manufacturers equipping their cars with in-dash radar detectors? I'd love a combo Navigation/radar detector/audio unit....

I think it depends on the state. I believe that some states have laws against radar detectors altogether.

If you buy a car with an in-dash detector in NY, how exactly do you visit antique shops in Virginia or your congressperson in DC?
There's one reason why cars aren't pre-equipped with stuff that's not legal everywhere -- you'd not be able to go everywhere.

There are several detectors that you can buy that are hidden, and the only thing that you see is the switch to change between highway and city, and the led's telling you when you are being hit. But we usually do is hide the LED's in a way that unless they are going off and you know where to look you can not see them.
M5 comes with a Valentine 1 built in.
Making it illegal to drive in DC and VA?
Do you have a link to the accessories list? I'm not seeing anything like that on the available options.
Here is a list of available options, I don't see a detector:

Escort makes a really good one that goes in your bumpers. Its around 1500 bucks. The only type of radar that is illegal is the radar blocker. but by the time your being gunned the police already can tell how fast your goin. Its there job to know

they are definitely illegal in VA upon entering our fine state you see a huge sign that reads "WELCOME TO VIRGINIA TURN OFF RADAR DETECTERS"
Well, sort of:
In Canada, they are ILLEGAL in all provinces and territories except British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan (the only good provinces anyway).
Radar detectors are LEGAL in all states except for DC and Virginia, and on military bases.
Laser Jammers and Radar Jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC. Haven't found the Canadian laws for jammers yet.. but I'm sure they're illegal everywhere.
