You really need to start this post out with how much you're willing to spend. All of the RDs mentioned in this thread so far would definately be considered top tier detectors and cost from $350 to $450. There are also quality detectors for less than that. Give us a price range, and you'll get better suggestions for your situation. I have a V1 and wouldn't own another.

I'm quite fond of my Bel RX65. It's worked extremely well for me thus far. I understand that the Escort 8500 is also a great unit, but I have no experience with it.

One big thing that I see a lot now is KA pop, and make sure any radar detector you have detects it. It is the same as KA, but a detector without ka pop will not go off until the policeman triggers it. My solo s2 does not detect this, but my dad's 8500 x50 detects it really good. A lot of cops are using it in my area. Probably sounded really confusing, but I hope this helps

aight, so if i drop allotta cash ill prolly get the 9500i...however...

whats great thats 250 and below? part of me feels its just a plain good idea to invest in an expensive detector, especially since one ticket plus insurance increase could easily amount to more then 500 bucks in the long run...

another question, any of you gotten a ticket with your detectors? i recently drove with one and it made me feel invincible..stupid i know...i was rather offset by the feeling... just wondering how well they work...thanks guys.

That is the worst thing to do, feel invincible. Sometimes I have used my radar detector in a friends car and they feel invincible as well. I don't know why, because you are not invincible.

I did some research on detectors last Aug/Sep and from what I found there were three which were considered to be the top of the food chain: Valentine 1, Escort Passport 8500 (now replaced by the 9500?) and the Beltronics RX65. From all of my readings, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them and it seems that each has developed a loyal fan base. I did find a study that directly compared all three to each other and I was happy with the way they did the test. The Beltronics came out on top and that's the one I went with. I don't have any previous detector experience, but I know that I LOVE mine.

A couple of points to remember (which have already saved my butt):
-they're not "cop detectors" so you still have to use your head
-just because your detector isn't going off doesn't mean that there's not a cop sitting there with a radar gun...you might be his first
-pay attention to ALL warnings; people get too used to false alarms and start disregarding the detector when it goes off; don't do that.

    I hope this helps...

Any Beltronics product in the 9xx range. For about $150 retail look at the 940, then there's the 955 and so on as the range goes up. The less you spend in the range the more likely you are to see falsing and detection range may diminish, though it's debatable whether you'd notice any range difference in real world use.

Since we have 4 cars I don't buy top tier detectors, I buy high bang:buck models below $200.

Radar use is extremely rare where I live, but the detectors are useful for the emergency signals, alerts, and so on. I've detected speed traps 2 km away around a bend etc., but with the traffic we see here both the detector and the trap itself are useless. I keep a voice alert detector around for company basically.
