I know this won't really be relevant, but I recently (2 days ago) got a new Japanese radar detector. I have to say I am really impressed so far. They cram so much technology into those little things.
The one I got is solar or DC powered and has a full color 1.5" screen, radar scope, GPS, GPS info (including known permanent photo radar installations and has downloadable updates), detects police, fire, and rescue radio frequencies, Patrol Car locations, no parking patrol areas, highway oasis areas, nearby parking areas, and tons more that I don't understand.

I don't know how well it works, but so far I am very impressed

No English versions, but I don't think it would help.
The GPS would be pretty useless, all the data is for Japanese roads, and the radar bands are probably different. Same for radio, etc.
I wish it were possible, I'd like to take it back to the states with me.
Oh, and I too am having many troubles with the Japanese. Some of it is alright, but a lot of it is pretty difficult to read. Fortunately most of the alarms are in English or Katakana
