can you browse your ipods on those alpines by genre? I'm just wondering because I'm thinking of getting one, and I have a full 60GB iPod, so I MUST have genre browsing capabilites.

yes. when the ipod is interfaced with the HU, you browse the mp3 player through the HU display the same way you would on the player. it all shows up.

Sorry, NO genre browsing with the Alpine CDA-9857. Just playlist, artist, album and song.

Exactly, although I do have about 110 artists I don't find it inconvienient at all when searching for songs. The quick search makes finding what you want very easy. Thanks for the complements.

Another possibility is to creat playlists of each genre in iTunes and then just select the playlist on the Alpine. Smart playlists make this easy.

oh, hey, the HU looks great! I'm happy with mine [the model below urs]. I'm not sure if it has the same illuminosity thing- altho, it can be kinda tough to see in the daylight, so maybe I just answered my own question. The main reason I got it was cuz of the ipod hookup; n ironically, I have yet to be able to use my ipod with it cuz it needed a software update [don't even ask..], but I know it works.. I found it to be kinda confusing, actually.

Are u able to use the ipod to browse instead of just the HU tho? I couldn't seem to figure out how, altho I coulda sworn it said u have that option in the manual..

Nope, although I don't think i'd ever use the ipod to browse. The HU is very easy to navigate (may be a bit easier than your model). I'll take some pics tonight or tomorrow of the ipod menu on the HU.
