From what I've gathered, radar detectors are very nice, as you can detect the signal from much farther away than it takes to slow down...

Laser detectors are useless - by the time you detect the laser, the cop has already caught you.

Laser jammers - which are legal, since they are regulated by the FDA, not the FCC like radar - are super-effective against laser threats.

EDIT: man, I'm tired. it took me that whole post to realize nothing had to do with OP . Anyway, mount it high - you'll be worse at detecting laser but significantly better at detecting radar, which is really the only important thing.

Full L for me too. And it picks up laser. Now its sets off the laser signal for red light cameras and those luxury cars that have the smart cruise control that radar or laser guided. I hate being a head of someone who has that on.

I stick to super logic "big L" in cities where radar is polluted and then little l (logic) and sometimes "A" all bogies when Im on the highway.

I just have a theory that little l and A process the alert faster than super logic, and since your going faster on the interstate you need to slow down quicker if you see a cop.

Its most likely just superstition though

Not when it comes to laser. Usually they will be shooting at your front license plate, and the spread on the beam might only be a foot or two in diameter. So lower is better for laser, higher better for radar.

    This.

Since laser triggers aren't as useful as radar, I would suggest mounting it as high as possible.

best place to mount it is on the shelf of the store that sells them. Drive smart and within your means, also the speed limit is your friend

There's more to using a detector than simply installing it and speeding like an idiot. It's another tool in the arsenal. When used properly, they're very effective.

Both of the above have valid points.. in reality you should not speed at all. Although, without a detector I would never have felt comfortable making the trip from Austin to Denton in 1hr and 40min.. I know for a fact that I can break the law more comfortably with the detector than without. That doesn't mean that breaking the speed limit is okay, or that the detector will keep me from getting caught... it's a tool, to be used at your discretion.

Have my 8500 suction cupped about 5 inches above the clock in the middle so it can read behind me between the seats. And per the 8500 manual and also research ive done it says mounting high is actually BAD...from all the reading ive done it says mount it as low as possible while not having it blocked by windshield wipers or a scoop. Am I totally off base or crazy or what? - Mount Detector Properly - RadarBusters.com In bold says "Don't mount it high" and says "Mount it Low" so im not sure what to go with

here is just one quote from the site "By mounting it this way, making sure that the windshield wipers are not blocking the front, you will draw the least amount of attention and obtain the best laser and radar detection."

    Higher mount: better for radar
    Lower mount: better for laser

What do LEO in your area use most?

In my area I have never had anything but K or Ka go off, so no Laser so far but still it says "you will draw the least amount of attention AND obtain the best laser and radar detection." So I am still torn on mounting the detector high even though my area is almost all K or Ka band. I think ill just split the diff and move the detector up 2 inches or so and hope for the best
