How are the radar detectors like the WHISTLER XTR-140 or similar models. Are the only good detectors ones like the valentine v1? Also are radar detectors illegal in colorado?

Besides asking here you might try googling some reviews. I had a passport 8500 I was happy with.

I believe they are legal in CO (only illegal in VA and DC I think) as well as laser detectors.

I have the 8500 and am very pleased with it.

Radar and Lidar (laser) detectors are legal in colorado. Laser Shifters are technically not, BUT there was recently a court ruling that said that the laser spectrum that police officers use is not off limits for civilian use, and therefore they became legal again.

Up until recently, I had never driven a vehicle with a radar detector. I haven't been pulled over for a "legit" speeding violation (> 5mph over the limit) in almost 5 years, driving 15-18K miles/year.

    I now run a V1.

The big thing for me is that I haven't changed my driving habits, which is where a lot of people who get radar detectors get into trouble.

    There's the key^^

After I got my radar detector I waited 1 month before I sped deliberately... In that one month of driving, you really learn the radar detector's "language"... and trust me... there's a language.

In my experience you gotta spend money, i had a few cobras for less than $70, and they were only good for annoying the hell out of you for false alarms.

best ive used is the passport pricey but worth it, with gps it minimizes the false alarms.
