On my '07, I had to press the A/C button solid for 5 seconds or so - then the A/C light blinked a few times. This made it so the auto function would never engage A/C without me pushing the button (however, I believe the defroster still turned it on - which is what you want).

This was all in my owners manual. I haven't bothered to see if this works on my '11 yet, but I have to imagine its the same thing.

It doesn't mention that in the '11 manual and I tried it earlier. The light didn't blink, and I'm not sure if it did anything yet. It'll be great if it does what you say it does though.

tried it in mine today - no go. I have no idea why Subaru would take that out???? It is clearly in the 07 manual, and I used it immediately.

Yeah, oh well. It should work well most of the year when it's not winter. We'll just have to turn it off manually when it turns on every time we put it back to the Auto setting.
