Think about it..... If someone DOES know about it.... they would leave it alone knowing it has to be "uninstalled", if they didn't know..... Bet you $50 they would try..... and succeed.

From back in my "Robin Hood" days.... If I couldn't get something out.... They weren't keeping it either. Just a thought. I'm sure I wasn't the only a-hole around.

Not trying to be a wanker..... To each their own. Looks nice though.

well thanks everbody for all the info and opinions, I do agree though people will steal anything you just have to be careful. What happened to the good ol' days?

    People stole stuff then too.

IMO he can still leave the APv2 there, just when he gets out put it in the glove box and lock it. That thing would be a real bear to get open even with a crowbar so chances are thieves aren't gonna waste the time to try and get in. They are after the "quick buck", people who leave GPS units out, Stereo faces on, Ipods lurking around, digital cameras etc.

If you pay attention to the "OMFG MY CAR GOT BROKEN INTO!!!!!" threads that routinely come across this board, you'll find an alarming trend. "They took my digicam and laptop ohnoes!" or "They got all my cds and ipod" or "They stole my Rolex that was in the cup holder!!!" Point is people, don't make yourself a victim. At any given time if a thief breaks into my car, he'll either steal the whole car (big whoop thats what insurance is for I'll get an 09), or get some random receipts, a few tshirts, couple rags and a "Justincase" emergency roadside kit if he pops the trunk.

    Depends on where you live.

I do remove it on occasion, when I park in certain lots for a while, when I'm feeling paranoid.

What kind of switch did you use? I'm on the Radio Shack website right now and they have about 5 pages worth lol. I want to use something different from yours, but I want to make sure that whatever I get will work.

Lets not forget, there are those people that just steal things they cant use outta spite or just take them because they look like they could be worth something. Some one else could just come by and think its an mp3 player or something.

    Anyhow, Nice Write up.

This is the one I used, but any SPST switch will work. RadioShack.com - Cables, Parts & Connectors: Component parts: Switches: 12VDC/30A SPST Illuminated Rocker Switch with Red LED

I just went to RadioShack and pawed through the bins until I found a switch that wasn't too ugly.

    Yea, I saw that one.

This is the one that I picked up today:

RadioShack.com - Cables, Parts & Connectors: Component parts: Switches: SPST 12VDC/20A Illuminated Toggle Switch with Green LED

I like it because it matches my gauges and what not. Now, when you wired it up, how did you mount it into the blank? did you cut a hole in it or something. And when you wired it up, did you have to run a ground from the switch itself? Or how did you exactly do it... I'm no genius at wiring so I kinda want to do this right the first time

    Thanks DUB

p.s. - I also picked up some extra wire (I believe 18 gauge) because I think I'm going to mount my switch on the center console (up near the glove box) because I have plans for the other two blanks near the steering wheel. I got some wire shrink wrap stuff as well to help seal the wires all nice and such, but I also have electrical tape in case that doesn't work.

If it matches that's cool. It will probably look good glowing green along with your gauges.
I chose the one I did just cause it was most discreet one they had.

Did you order it online? Or do you have the actual switch in your hand? It's pretty easy to figure out when your actually looking at it. I too am no wiring expert, but I managed.

Mounting: The knurled ring as a threaded nut. On the package, it will say what size hole you need to drill. Just drill a hole in the switch blank, slide the threaded post of the switch through, and secure it with the nut. Simple.

Wiring: There are three terminals, they should be labeled. Two connect to the two leads from your usb cable, the third is a ground. If you connect the supply and load backwards the first time, it's no big deal, the switch will just work in the opposite direction and you can swap 'em. The ground wire only exists so the light works, it has no effect on the functionality of the switch. I didn't care about the little LED and I was too lazy to run a wire to a ground, so I left it off.

Ahhh thanks I do have the switch in my hand. It has the 3 prongs (ground, power, and acc).

The green wire doesn't go anywhere since it's the "data" cable, the red wire goes to the power, and then the black wire doesn't do anything since it's the ground? And if I want the LED to light up, all I have to do is run a ground from the switch to a ground? Or run the ground from the AP USB cable... sorry for all the questions - what can I say, I'm such a n00b

The power and acc are equivalent to the supply and load in my diagram.

Are you talking about the colored wires that make up the inside the USB cable?

As far as the wires inside the usb cable go, you are only concerned with the red one. The red one is carrying the power. Leave all the others alone.

    That's right.
