    Running Lights won't shut off.

I didn't know where to post electrical issues but I figgured Id try here. So just this afternoon when I shut my car off the running lights stayed on, I didn't think much of it and I figgured it would shut off soon, even though that has never happened to me. I went back out to my car just now and the running lights on the front and the tail lights are still on. I made sure my lights are shut to off (which shouldnt matter if the cars off), tried starting and turning off the car again, and i disconnected the positive cable on the battery but whenever I put the cable back on, the lights are still on.

Does anyone know how i can fix this? Thanks.

Make sure you have the parking lamp switch turned off. It's right above the steering wheel on the column.

I remember the first time I had my car in the body shop. I got a phone call from the body guy telling me that my running lights wouldn't turn off

there should be a sticky on this subject in the noobie section. If you don't go through the manual most wouldn't figure out the switch on the steering wheel column.

That may not be a bad idea. Maybe we could add the info to an existing thread..

So I'm sure this is a stupid question but what is the reason for that switch? Ive never seen another car with it...

It's there so that you can turn your parking lights on.. like if you need to park on the side of a dark street or something for a little while. The lights make the car visible to other drivers at night.

Other cars do it better by allowing you to select only the left or right side lights to leave on. The assumption is that only one side of the car will be exposed to traffic so only that side needs lights. Less draw so more time to safely leave the lights on. Still, I'd take Subaru's both-side solution over nothing any day.

I had to use mine a couple months ago on the way back home getting off a 14 hour flight. It was 2am, I was super jet lagged, and had to drive 3 hours home from the airport. I got so sleepy my eyes kept going crossed and I couldn't keep focused on the road, so I pulled off onto a small side road, flipped my parking lights on, shut the car off, and went to sleep. About an hour and a half later I was awoke to the sound of my radar detector going nuts.. a sheriff deputy pulled up to check on me (probably though I was drunk). Luckily the short nap was just enough to get me home safely. The deputy said it was a good thing I had put my parking lights on because they see a lot of cars getting struck late at night with their lights off.

I can see it being handy if parked on tight roads too. Fold the mirror in, put the lights on, hope nobody collects a fender passing by.
