    Custom Mounted iPhone Dock

Here are some pics of my custom mounted dock to hold my iPhone. I basically just built a sturdy platform out of wood and secured it the same way you secure the box that usually fills the empty DIN. Tricky part was getting the platform to be level, as the head unit and mounting bracket are angled upward slightly. The dock charges the iPhone (or any iPod you put in it) and connects to the aux-in of the head unit for music. Unfortunately the iPhone does not output phone call audio through the dock connector, but I still achieve hands-free calling via a bluetooth headset which I store discretely in the driver-side door handle crevasse.

All that's left is to make a piece to fit over the opening around the dock painted the same color as the plastic in the dash so it blends.

Nope. It blocks the hazard switch, but not when the iPhone is out so that's fine. It slightly blocks the vents, but not noticeable at all.

    That's pretty hott!

Seriously, finding a good place to put your ipod/gps system/phone is HELL in the WRX! Atleast pre-2007 IMO. I've searched high and low for a guage pod that would hold my electronic accessories to no avail. Maybe I'll have to do something custom too!

How would popsicle sticks and duck tape look with my carbon fiber trim?

I agree. Not easy to find a spot for everything and have it all look like it was meant to be there. I'm happy with how my setup turned out though in terms of head unit/switches/iPhone/GPS. Next step is to custom mount the GPS; I have the wiring done but I hate that it's suction cupped to the windshield.

P.S. I love the look of exposed duct tape shoddily holding things together. And popsicle sticks would definitely be a nice touch.

I like your innovation! I'm not sure it would survive for long in my car. I'm thinking of my favorite righthand curve near my house, and the little bump at the apex...and seeing my phone going flying out my passenger side window.

Haha, reasonable concerns. Actually though, the iPhone is held in there better than it looks. So far I have not been able to unseat it with my harsh driving. We'll see if it lasts.
