    Communication between cars? Any ideas?

Hey guys. Ive been wondering this for a while. Instead of using two way radios that work with line of sight frequencies, is there another, longer range solution for communication between two cars?

Well, it depends on a lot of things...
What kind of range are you looking for?
What kind of environment would you be driving in? (City, town, Open plains, etc)

I do think they have some smaller semi more fashionable atenna's on the market now....none the less I understand it's not a "hip" thing to have by any means.

Cell phones + Hands free is an option but hard to include a group of people into the conversation.

Other then the CB and Cellphone idea I can not think of a cheap option. I'm sure someone like Nextel can put together a decent walkie talkie package using their 800 mgh/z system but it would be rather expensive I'd imagine.

Back in the days when rallying was real rallying, VHF was the way to go in many countries. Range was 10 km or even better sometimes, meaning a base station could communicate with a car almost entirely through most stages (since a special stage isn't a straight line away from the start, it's got lots of curves along its length).

I imagine in the US the FCC might object to the use of marine radio inland, but I simply don't know who does what as far as US agencies go. In many countries, marine radio is regulated by port authorities or coastal authorities, and there are no coast guard craft on mountainsides so VHF worked great for rallyists for years (enforcement of any regulations was a moot point).

Try CB, a cellphone as mentioned, or use the Force.

I have a CB hooked up in the picture I have as my avatar - the antenna is about 1.5' (it's not as fugly as the large ones from back in the 80s)

A good quality 2 way radio doesn't require line of sight. It should work fine over a 2 mile distance even in hilly terrain, though it'll suck up the battery. 2 way communication has been around for a long time, so your choices are basically:
    2 way radio
CB - they do make pretty small antennas btw, but the smaller the antenna, the shorter your range in general
    Cell phone
Marine radio - This is just a 2 way radio on a different frequency so I don't know why you'd bother
