Mileage stored on cluster or ecu?

I was wondering if the mileage reading on the instrument cluster on a 2002 WRX is stored in the ecu or on the actual cluster unit? Can enginuity modify it? Reason I ask is because I want to upgrade mine but want the milage to be true.
