My reaction when I saw this was "whoa".

Do you have a parts list and price on this stuff. Does the comp. dirve the speakers in the car.
I love this set up btw. I would love to do the same thing in my car![]()
The computer runs the speakers via amp/s or a headunit.
I want one, but I'm not dropping over a grand for it.

I've been thinking of creating my own setup for something like this but probably won't for some time. It would be worth it for me since I would love to have like an 80 gb HDD in my car, store all my songs and all and could just transfer wirelessly via a router... that and if you really wanted to you could run it off of a usb drive attached to a motherboard for a cheap setup.
All you'd need is...
-a motherboard that (supports usb booting and (optional)) has decent onboard video and usb ports
-either A. an additional usb port with flash drive for music and such
B. an external or internal hdd which either wouldn't be that expensive, easier to go with an internal of course. Preferably a laptop one for bumps and such.
-touchscreen with mounting bracket
-some wires
-carpc type power supply
-and either an amp with connections to run to the computers sound card or a sound card that is designed for surround sound.
Could run the amp underneath the driver seat and the computer under the pass seat.
I know if you look hard enough you could find the hdd, motherboard, and sound card for under 350 (use the mp3car usb sound card thing on their website) you could get a touch screen for roughly 225 off ebay (good quality one), mounting bracket 0-140, wires under 50, power supply for 40-60. Also, you could grab up a wireless keyboard with mouse pad on it for like 40 maybe(not entirely sure)... 35 for a usb wireless card
So if you would do it yourself you could easily get one for roughly 850.00 if you install it yourself and research the parts lists.

just as long as the mac mini is running xp. the only reason i say this is becasue alot of the software is meant for xp. i would rather just build a completly custom Uber PC, and run a ton of software. not too crazy though, maybe like 2g 800 MHz of Kingston DDR2 RAM ($50), Maxtor 300g SATA 7200 ($110), 2.4 GHz processor ($315), i wouldnt know what mother board to use i would have to research first, i good case, and external DVD burner, some extended USB ports, and then just a bunch of other small stuff. that would be fun to build. if i had the money i wuould try it.
That's a good idea.
There you go, store a laptop or mac mini in the glovebox, s-video to a touchscreen, you got something that you can take anywhere and it would be easy. If you wanted music, just hook up that mp3car usb port sound card thing to the stock speakers.
but also slightly expensive on depending on if you used a mac mini or laptop.
Ebay laptop for 250, touchscreen 250, mounting bracket 0-140, wires 50, amp thing 120
So about 810. but you could have a laptop then too. Personally I think that would be a better idea.

Fujitsu Lifebook FTW
I am very close to buying one, but my friend Chris just picked up a Sony UX490 (48gb flash drive) and after seeing that, I'm going to wait a little while for something better. I've been rediculously tempted on the Asus EEE laptop, but after I look at all the mods I would want to do to it, I end up right back at the Fujitsu 810.
