    Radar/Laser detectors

I was thinkin of gettin my dad a Radar detector for his 07 WRX. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these things seeing i know nothing about them. Anything reasonable and reliable would be great.

    Good Companies

Hey man I don't know that much about the detectors but I do know a few good companies so anything in your price range with those companies might be your best bet. I know that escort, beltronics, and whistler are great companies. I have heard of cobra also but i am not too sure about how well they work, so just read into each before buying and good luck!

    radar detector

I wouldn't get one, save your money. I used to own one before I was a cop, now I realize how much of a waste they are. I can't tell you how many tickets I've written to people with radar detectors in thier vehicles and ON when I pull them.

He is trying to say that the radar detectors didn't give them enough of a warning to slow down before he clocked them. I have heard that valentine are the best but have also heard good things about the bell and escort.

Radar detectors are helpful, but you should not rely on them. Many times, by the time your detector picks it up (especially if it's laser), they already have you clocked. Also, in some states, they're illegal (I believe). Make sure you know the law in the states you drive.

Ya plus I have driven a car with the valentine and I know that is one of the more expensive ones and the thing was going off the whole drive unless I went on a backroad with no other cars but as soon as any old car came by it started going off. Id spend that money somewhere else. You said it was for your dad what kind of car does he have maybe we could help think of something else to get him

Depends on a few things. Most radar detectors are a complete waste of money......such as cobra etc. Basically any of the radar detectors you can buy at wallmart etc, are junk.

The Escort and Valentine 1 on the other hand are very very effective. The only situation that no detector is very effective is Laser. The reason for this is that laser is pinpoint and isnt spread all over the area like radar. But not all cops use laser, depends on the area. My personal experience has shown more local cops use laser while state troopers tend to just use radar.

In the case of radar, my V1 would alert me and tell me if they are in front of me. Then I would just wait till I found them and speed up again, typically I would have almost a minute warning, which is more then enough to save you from a ticket.

Whenever I see car speeding with a crappy detector on the window I cant help but laugh at their false sense of their security.

I have a cheap detector. It helped me orchestrate a several year long no speeding ticket streak that held until just recently.

They are definitely not fail proof though, so don't get too relaxed. Especially with laser, as I learned a few weeks ago when I got pulled over for speeding with an open beer in the car. Pretty funny story now that I look back on it.

Not sure what it is. Too apathetic to run out and check. Bought it for like $60 at a radioshack a few days after I got my first car.

Radar will bounce off vehicles and some of it will stray (due to the constant barrage of the waves) and your detector will pick it up. I believe laser only requires one beam of light.

Depending on your state (if it's legal), get a jammer - that will give you enough time to slow down to a legal speed before you turn it off (if a cop knows your jamming, they'll probably harass you). These are a little more expensive than a high-end detector, but will do a bit better of a job (a few co-workers have these, even though they're illegal in NY, and haven't had tickets) - often times, they'll come with ticket warranties, so if you get one, they'll pay it (not your insurance hike, though).

As for the use of radar vs lasers - I believe staties use radar because a lot of their gunning is just sitting in highway turn-arounds (don't know what else to call them, even though they have a NO U-TURN sign in each one). This will enable them to do random paperwork while letting their radar do the work (not forcing them to gun everyone).
