    Embedded Radio Antenna Performance

So my radio reception was good with the factory head unit.

I put in a Kenwood HU, and now my radio reception is fairly crappy -- I can get most FM stations, but they go staticy in underpasses, and the scanning station recognition is very poor; also the AM reception is completely useless.

The Kenwood support line claims that the antenna type that is embedded in the window are such that the radio circuitry is specially tuned for it, and that I'll need to install a standard antenna.

That's lame. Anybody got any ideas on this?

    jeff.

Did you make sure on the harness you got with you're radio, that you plugged the power antenna (blue) into the factory harness? There is an amplifier that needs to be turned on for the embedded antenna if I'm not mistaken, and most peopel forget to plug the power antenna line into it. I forgot to on my AVIC-D1 and wondered how I could get such crappy radio strength on that unit.
    Good Luck!

yep, what he said. I did the same thing too. I forgot to wire up the blue power antenna in the harness, but once I did reception was perfect.

The Knack. It's a rare condition characterized by an extreme intuition about all things mechanical and electrical ... and utter social ineptitude.

And this is what Crutchfield is now telling me. I'll dig into it this weekend; but I thought I'd connected all the wires that they supplied in the harness. But when I'd called and asked about a missing wire from their harness (which was populated in the connector for the cable in the factor harness), they said "don't worry about it". My vague memory is that it was labelled "Antenna Power". Hmm, starting to sound suspicious.....

Yeahwell, we'll see. I'm betting I'm going to have to hard-wire connect the lead in question.

Thanks for the answers, folks. Sounds like this will take care of it.

Fixed it up nice. Great radio reception now, both bands.

    Thanks all.

BTW, be cautious with radio support folk. Kenwood geek told me: "yeah, that's a problem with late-model antennas; you'll have to buy a standard antenna."

    Eek.
