Both HKs and Defi already make a system like this. HKS calls it CAMP and requires a separate LCD monitor and Defi sells an LCD monitor that attaches to their gauge control module.

I am looking into making a custom monitoring tool to plug into the ECU. I saw one thread on this, but they were more talking about re-programming the ECU. I just want to make some software to watch things like EGTs and water temp and oil pressure, etc. I plan to connect it to a laptop first, but eventually plug it into a small LCD with some custom software running on a RTOS like VxWorks.
My questions are:
Where is there a reliable map for the ECU (or any other data acquisition points)?
Does it update fast enough? (1/sec should be enough, I am only monitoring)
Is there a want for this? Would anyone buy it?
I am pretty good a SW (masters degree and all) and would make it customizable for what to display where, and make things bigger and more colorful as they approach limits the user would setup. Any suggestions, ideas or sensor help would be greatly appreciated. I will post my progress....

Those are pretty cool, but they require you to run more sensors. I was looking at taking advantage of the data already sent to the ECU, and specifically making it for the WRX.
Thanks for the links, though. They are definitely around the same ballpark that I would like to do (especially the HKS CAMP).
if you want this and have the $$$$buy the stock lcd for the skyline R34 and custom fit it for your dash and wiring
So after some research, it looks like I am going to start at the OBD-2 route and check what sensors the WRX has available and how often it updates. I should get my wire and sw on Monday. Provided it is the data I need, I'll start on the windows version of my sw next week.
If it is not...then I have to start looking at come ecu plugs...
Sorry...completely forgot to link to the pinout diagram!! Here it is

ECUTEK's Deltadash pulls quite a bit from the OBDII port. Check out thier site it gives a list.
