    factory sub any good?

I'm looking for a nice upgrade to the sound system...I'm looking to spend under $200 (see OEM subs on ebay for $125) & will attempt to do the labor myself. I looked at the factory sub installation guide & it looks simple enough...is it worth the money or is there some other sub/amp I should be looking at? I would like to keep it mounted underneat on of the seats too...

    Thanks,
    Tony

I have one only becuase it was installed in the car I bought off the lot. I wouldn't buy one because I think its crap. I've read/heard good things about the basslink from Infinity for a little bit more money but don't have first hand experience. If it were me I'd check out the basslink or save up and get a proper amp and sub.

If you really want to go with the factory sub you can buy mine.. its still installed but its been replaced by a 12 inch alpine sub and an amp.

I wouldnt do it though. Its not that good. I dont know about other choices though, except to go with a sub in the trunk.

Let me know, Ill sell it to you cheap

I have had the factory sub and I currently have the basslink. The ONLY thing good about the factory sub (at least the 03 sub that I had) is that it fits under the seat and takes up no precious cargo space. It's weak - about 140 watts or less Panasonic makes it, which isn't too bad, but it's really a $40 sub that tthey gouge you for cause it's "genuine subaru parts."

The basslink takes up a lot more space (obviously), but it's way more compact than a lot of others. If it's just for you to hear music, it's great. If you want to impress friends and irritate neighbors with the boom, it's not powerful enough.

you can always add one under the drivers seat for some more boom.

Im not that huge of an audio guy, when it comes to the inside of my car. I do have the factory sub underneath the passenger seat and it really doesnt do much. You can hear a little more bass but thats it.

I don't think so, other than trying to make something yourself but the basslink wouldn't take up that much room and I'd guess it would be pretty easy to take out if you really needed the room.

What if I pass on the amp/sub combo idea and just go with an amp to fit under the seat and upgrade all the speakers?

If you forgo the Sub you will lose much of the low end. The 6 (not sure what the exact size is) inch speakers just cant give you that.

Changing all the speakers would sound a lot better though. If you buy a 5 channel amp you could try to upgrade only the speakers. If it doesnt sound right you can always add a sub later.

    Hope this helps!

I sold my factory sub which was better than not having a sub, but the Basslink is by far a major upgrade. If I were to do it all over again, I would have insisted on a regular stereo with the car and and not bought the upgraded sound system. I have the Alpine XM radio with the Basslink and I'm thrilled.
