How many servers do you have running the site, are you doing any load balancing/clustering?

Does this vBulletin use SQL databases, if so maybe the database size is too much for the server?

i'm pretty new here, but i get that message quite often. just today i got it around 1:30 in the afternoon and just about 5 minutes ago. hope they fix it. this site seems pretty great except for the dumb server error

When the server fails, it fails for everyone. Once the server comes back up and you hit "Today's Posts" you can see a gap in the new posts time stamps.
