    Synthetic EVERYTHING!?

I just hit 39k miles and finally getting around to doing the 30K service. I've always done mobil 1 for oil but in talking with a friend he says he puts synthetic everything in the car. The service person said it wasn't worth it. Probably because they were planning on topping off rather than doing the actual flush and fill job.

    So - question is:

Is it worth it? Assuming the answer is yes, what are the brands, part numbers, etc... I need to go and get it myself at a retail store.

    Thanks all.

Search on Synthetic Transmission fluid. There's a couple of LONG threads here on using synth tranny/diff fluid including which brands, etc. You may also want to look in the technical reference sticky in engine performance. There are a few links to oil comparisons.

^^Information to help you help yourself^^

So it looks like the jury is still out on synthetic gear oil huh?

Might just stick with the old style.

On a side note - my clutch shudder and decel noise were things that I probably should have gotten fixed - thanks to this forum I now have the service bulliten.

I say yes use synthetic all the way around. I did it for my tranny/diff, a the 30K service. and I thought I was crazy about feeling a difference in power. But then last week I was watching horsepower TV on the "spike network" and they had a segment about useing all synthetic fluids. The took a stock 98 camero SS and ran her on the dyno before and after switching to all synthetic. They got a net gain of about 9 HP at the wheels...I was like WTF...gains in HP by just having Synthetic oil and Synthetic tranny/diff fluids.

    BTW..they were using Royal Purple

    3.7 qts.

Don't forget, you need a GL-5 rated gear oil.

In the winter time, synthetic is a must IMHO. So much easier to row the gears when the gearbox is cold

I noticed about a 1-2 mpg improvement after making the complete switch.

So I was calling around to find Royal Purple GL-5 and nowhere has it. Pepboys, nope. Advance Auto, nope. Autozone is too far away. Called the local little guys and 1 person had 2 bottles of that - and 2 bottles of Redline.... He suggested I mix them... synthetic is all the same - was what he said.

    DAMMIT!

    yeah - thanks for that.

I had already called them all in my area.

Stuff is difficult to pin down. At least - the gear oil is.

Had I more time I'd get if off E-bay. Somebody's selling it for like $25 for 4 qts.
