    Keeping Track of Recalls?

After hearing about the recall for the Cruise Control I did a little more research, it looks like there are few others we should know about.
I will post those articles here.

    Cruise Control WRX/Outback
CHERRY HILL, N.J., - Subaru of America, Inc. today announced a voluntary recall on certain 2001-2004 six cylinder Outback models, and 2002-2004 Impreza WRX 2.0L models to address a possible cruise control cable problem.

This recall involves certain 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 model year Subaru Outback H-6 3.0L and Impreza WRX 2.0L turbo vehicles. The potentially affected Outback vehicles were produced at Subaru Indiana Automotive, Inc. between March 15, 2000 and February 19, 2004, and the Impreza WRX vehicles were produced at Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. between September 5, 2000 and February 12, 2004. Approximately 127,580 vehicles are potentially affected.

It is possible for the cruise control cable to come out of its track on the cruise control throttle lever and lodge on the control lever tab when the accelerator pedal is released. If this condition occurs, the throttle will not return to the idle position and instead remain in an open position. This condition could occur at any time without prior notice and control of the vehicle could be affected.

Although we believe the percentage of vehicles likely to actually experience the failure is very low, a cruise control cable retaining clip will be installed on all potentially affected vehicles. The cruise control cable retaining clip will be fitted to the cruise control lever tab on the throttle shaft in order to prevent the cruise control cable from coming out of its track.

The campaign was launched as a result of Subaru field inspections and quality assurance testing. There have been no accidents or injuries attributed to this problem.

In early April, we will notify all owners of potentially affected vehicles of this potential problem by first class mail and ask them to contact their dealer to arrange a service appointment to have the cruise control cable retaining clip installed at no charge to the owner. We will also advise owners in the notification letter of the action to take if they encounter this condition.

    Airbag Impreza/Legacy

    February 8, 1999
DETROIT (SafetyAlerts) - Subaru of America Inc., a unit of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., and the NHTSA today advised of a recall involving the following models

    Model: Impreza Years: 1994-1995

    Model: Legacy Years: 1995-1996

    Number Involved: 95,693

    Dates of Manufacture
    February 1994 - July 1995

    Defect
Inadvertent air bag deployment on certain passenger vehicles can occur after undercarriage contact of the tow hooks with curbs, dips, speed bumps, potholes, etc. Unexpected air bag deployment could result in personal injury.

    Remedy
Dealers will remove the front tow hooks. Owner notification was to begin during January 1999. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. [NHTSA Recall No. 98V315]

NHTSA said it is publicizing the recalls to alert consumers about safety problems and encourages them to take action. Under federal law, safety problems must be remedied without cost to consumers. Currently, 70 percent of the owners of vehicles with safety problems have the recall work performed.

NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with federal safety standards is found. The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a particular make and model may be subject to the recall.

Auto Tranny 02/03 Legacy, Impreza, Baja, Forester

Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) has announced a voluntary recall for a possible defect in the automatic transmission parking rod which engages the parking pawl into the parking gear. This recall involves 163,243 automatic transmission assemblies that were installed in very late production 2001 Legacy vehicles, all 2002 Legacy, Outback, Forester, and Impreza vehicles and some early production 2003 Legacy, Outback, Baja, Forester and Impreza vehicles. When the transmission selector lever of affected vehicles is placed in the "Park" position, the mechanism that is intended to hold the vehicle in "Park" may not fully engage, and the vehicle could move without prior warning. Properly applying the parking brake will prevent vehicle movement even if this condition exists.

Because of the general aversion to the dealer on this board I think it is important that we stay on top of recalls.

Yours and your passengers safety is priority, please don't endanger yourself or others by ignoring recalls.

I don't want to start a panic here, I'm sure if you looked up recalls for other car manufacturers you'd find alot more recall notices. It is a normal part of the auto industry.

    Stay safe!

Subaru Of America Recalls Vehicles Subject To Coolant Leaks

Subaru of America Inc recalled for 376,000 vehicles that may be susceptible to coolant leaks at the engine cylinder head gasket. In a press release Wednesday, the unit of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. said the recall involves certain of its Legacy and Outback models with 2.5-liter engines from the years 2000 through 2002, as well as certain 2.5-liter Impreza and Forester models from 1999 through 2002.

The coolant leaks may result from normal expansion and contraction of engine components, and potentially affected vehicles will have a conditioner added to their cooling systems by Subaru dealers at no cost. Notification of owners began in mid-February and will run through early May 2004, the comapny said.
