Synthetic Stuff???

Hey... Went to the Subaru dealer and inquired about the 30,000 mile service, and they said that they would put in synthetic oil and tranny fluid if I wanted. The person who owned it before never put synthetic oil in it, so would it be ok to start now? I have about 31,000 miles on it. I always used Mobil 1 on my other cars so that is what I would like to have in the car....also, does synthetic tranny fluid help smooth the shifting that much? I have read around and heard that it helps a bit, but was wondering if that is something that I should do while I get it serviced. If anyone knows what kinds of fluids there are or what ones tend to work better than others, that would be great. Thanks!
