    Rex smoking on incline/decline

Trying to get appt at Rallispec to have them do compression/leak tests. Whenever the car is idling while on an incline especially, smoke starts pouring out exhaust. Combo of blue(can smell oil) and dirty white. Can't smell any coolant and am not loosing any. I'm hoping it's the turbo seals and not an exhaust valve. It doesn't smoke while driving but boosts a little later than it use to. Has anyone else here had anything similiar? -I got TXS st.3 u-chip w/shorty intake. Car has gone thru stages,1,2 and now 3. Initially, after a real hard 1 and 2nd gear pull on road, I got smoke coming out of scoop coming from turbo area. No external leaks or residue evident. I didn't have the intake on either when this began to happen. It has since stopped smoking externally, and now out tailpipe. Hopefully comp. tests will show it's not internal but probably seals so I have a reason to go w/ bigger turbo. I HOPE

This started before I installed the TXS intake. The intake is like the perrin shorty, no MAF problems. Regardless, I gave it a shot today and switched back to stock airbox and reset ecu. Warmed it up, backed out of my driveway(incline) and got blue smoke soon as I started accel. Drove for 6 mi. to remove any old residue possibly in system. Parked in sister's driveway which is a subtle incline. I left car idle for 3min. When I came outside, smoke pouring out exhaust. Once I started to drive it went away. Even at level redlights it's cool. Once it's on an incline, heavy smoke. Rallispec got back to me and can't fit me in for such a small job. I'll end up having to take it to my dealer . Any other ideas or thoughts on what I can try?

    Thanks

It's the incline thing that's confusing me. Check all the vac/air/oil lines for kinks. Check the IC hose for excessive gunk inside, and check the PCV system for blockage. Sorry this isn't too much help.

Yeah, the incline thing is weird. I'm gonna pull I/C and check lines. I can drive it 30 mi home from work. Half stop and go and half 60 mph freeway trip w/ no smoke. But as soon as I pull into my driveway(steep incline) and I let it idle for a minute smoke starts to pour out. I have been using Mobil 1 for 25k mi changing every 3(i'm anal) and always let car idle for 2 min. before shutting off. No increase in eng. temp and no significant oil loss. Maybe a 3rd of a quart every 3k mi. I'm gonna run out now and pull I/C. I'll post back what I find. Big I/c so I'm expexting it to be full of oil.
Thanks for the suggestions man, I'm stumped.

O.K . I got the I/c off and found no real, wet, oil residue. Only slight tacky residue on I/c to turbo inlet hose. The breather line which is a single tube that replaces the 2 stock hoses that run in front of stock I/c "was" pinched and was showing signs of being pinched near closed.. The replacent line from TXS had to be routed under I/c. I don't think it punctured it, but will still replace tomorrow. This is the TXS v.1 I/C and fitment is tighter than v.2. I've never felt a turbo for shaft play, but mine seems O.K. Hopefully, it was the pinched breather hose that was causing this. No other lines were damaged or kinked. Is the PCV what plugs into turbo inlet hose? I pulled that and nio blockage.
Thanks again for your help SD_GR I post back on results.

Alright, Everything back together and after a long drive , It's a little better. I even recorded the time it takes to start smoking on incline.(after a few beers). I feel confident I drove it enough after my changes to remove any oil buildup that might have been lingering. It got dark out so I placed a bright flashlight pointing directly at tailpipe while idling after a 1 hr drive. Immediately there were no signs of any smoke/fumes. After 2 min., still no signs of anything. Crushing first beer and mid way thru 2nd, back out side, and a visible cloud of blueish gray smoke trailing about 3ft. from car. Hit the gas and I killed every bug within 20ft. Never went away til I shut car off 7:40 odd seconds later. I am in 85 deg. temp w/ 95% humidity. I revved the hell out of it at the occasional redlight I encountered(2-3 hard blips) and no smoke. It's something w/ idling and the combination of an incline. Balancing checkbook now and preparing for rapage.
    I'll post what comes about.

    Thanks

Compression/Leak test showed no culprit. Subie Tech. agreed it was turbo seals going bad. Anyway, just ordered VF30, STi inj, Walbro. pump and gasket kit from Gruppe-S. I knew I had no warranty(turbo) and wanted to make sure it wasn't internal before purchasing new turbo. Getting my $ out of TXS u-chip and will be ST. 4+ TMI in a few weeks I'll tackle install myself and do 30k mi. service. I already had front brakes done and brake fluid flush so PITA part is done. I think/find out. soon.
For those wondering, first sign to me of slow turbo failure was repeated smoke(strong oil smell ) heavy visually off of turbo but no leaks.(Ocassional, but went away quickly) Then, gradual increase in oil smoke out tailpipe. Turning into annoying/embarrassing insect exterminator. But only occasional. My driveway is a steep incline, and idling on it for a few minutes, it became a "Lawn Fogger". The VF 30 is a mild/cheap upgrade and I will be happy to hit another 30k mi. w/ it. I hope it lasts that long.

    It was the stock turbo!

When I removed the downpipe from the stock TD04, there was lots of fresh oil in downpipe and all over the exhaust turbine. Oil went beyond downpipe and into midsection. There was no shaft play, and no visible signs on outside of turbo. I saw a picture of somebody else's stocker all burned up looking w/ black, burnt oil all over it. Mine just had oil all over exhaust turbine. Fresh oil. Glad it was the turbo and not a serious internal problem.

bringing this post out from the archives, mine has been doing this recently also, i did a search and found this post.

so far it seems i have the same problem. i went to the dealership. they could not find anything wrong with the car, and said the small smoke coming from the engine bay was like burning plastic from the plastic clip on the firewall hitting the downpipe, so i took that off the other day and ntohign from the engine bay since, but on some small inclines after driving for some time, and i sit idle, it starts to smoke. sometimes it smells like oil, that tart bitter smell, and sometimes its nothign. ive been checking the oil consumption, and nothing major, just between the circle and the f on the dipstick, but its like hard to sell what is what since the oil is hot and everytime i check its a little different with a difference of a few milimeters.

I have noticed more condensation, and the water droplets forming on the exhaust, but sometimes is does more, i can't figure it out. i looked at my stock turbo exhaust housing and nothing, its clean except for the black from the exhaust, no oil, no brown, nothing so far. Any ideas?

it did it again, but i noticed that it had that bitter smell for only a couple seconds, and it continued to smoke but not as much, and it did not smell any more than the gas
