Only reason I ask is my friend swears by Lucas Oil Treatment and suggest I try it next time I change my oil

I have no experience with Lucas products, but I'm guessing you are talking about Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer (not seeing an 'oil treatment' on their web site). From the spec sheet, it appears to be nothing more than a very high viscosity (very thick) oil. The viscosity (ASTM D 445 @ 100C) is 110. Compare this to their 70WT race oil, which has a viscosity of 30 in the same test, and your average 5W30, which is around 10. In fact, you can use ratios of up to 80% of it in your engine.

However, I'm very leery of oil/fuel additives, many of them have been proven to be a hoax and may actually accelarate engine wear.

IMHO, just use a high quality synthetic oil (I use Mobil1 0W40) and forget about the additives.
