    Unhappy Engine sounds bad...

Well not really all THAT bad, but I'm starting to get concerned. I have this ticking noise. It doesn't affect performance at all, but it's kind of annoying. Is it anything that I have to worry about, or would a simple tune up alleviate this problem? Fuel additives, etc...? I only have 20k miles on it. Any help would be appreciated.

From what I've read it's normal. The ticking noise is caused by the shim-under-bucket design of the valvetrain. There are small steel shims placed between the end of the valve stem and the bucket follower that's in contact with the camshaft lobe. My car ticks at idle and my buddies WRX does to.

However, you could always have a dealership check it out. If your timing belt tensioner is going bad (somewhat common problem), it makes a loud ticking noise too.
