This is a discussion on Parts Dept asking for VIN? within the General Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Accidents. forums, part of the Tech & Modifying & General Repairs category; I called the parts dept @ the Subbie dealership and inquired about two gaskets, the turbo intake and down pipe ...
I called the parts dept @ the Subbie dealership and inquired about two gaskets, the turbo intake and down pipe gasket. They told me they could not sell me the gaskets without me giving them my vin number. In disbelief I called another local dealership and they told me the same thing!
Is this SOA trying to track down all of us who might be doing aftermarket mods that could effect our warranty? Do not get me wrong, I do not expect SOA to honor a warranty claim on my engine after all the mods that I have done, I just found it odd that they were asking for a vin..

My Lexus parts department didn't REQUIRE VIN, but asked as a matter of course every time a tech/outside shop ordered parts because there were invariably parts that were superceded after a certain build date or VIN cut-off.
It's weird that they won't sell you the part without the #.

Someone else was asking abou twhere to buy these at the same time you were... see this post for info:
uppipe gaskets
as I linked to a place online and suggested another as well as a cheaper and untracked alternative to buying them from the dealer.
"Does this look like a Q to you?"

"How bout now?"
Giggidy Giggidy Giggidy!
That's total crap! I think they are definetly trying to screw you on the warranty. I bought all the gaskets to do the uppipe and they didn't ask me for my vin. Order your parts online, I'm sure they won't ask either.
I bought the gaskets before and never were asked these questions before. I'm guessing that SOA must have a lot of claims coming their direction....

LOL....or just give them the wrong last couple of digits....they'll only look at the prefix for validity. Though personally I'd signal them "you're number one" and take my business elsewhere!
